Torture, bestiality, war, child abuse, rape ... The list of unsavory activities Hollywood chooses to include in films is almost endless. However, Gerard Baker of London's Times notes that there is one exception--regardless of most actors' almost religious opinion in support of one's "right" to it: abortion.
He points to recent films in which the protagonist chooses life--and, in so doing, is surprisingly not presented as a backwoods, unenlightened, fundamentalist, but as someone who has ultimately taken the moral high road in his or her choice. As Baker points out, if (as abortion advocates suggest) the fetus is merely a mass of cells, there is no moral high road to take. So why not make movies about people having abortions and then going on their way with improved lives and clear consciences.
The truth is, films like these are not made as pro-life recruitment videos or evangelical propaganda. (Both movies he cites are apparently rife with non-marital sexual content and adult language, so I don't see a Dobson endorsement anywhere in their futures.) The simple fact is that they resonate with what our consciences tell us is true: every life is precious, and those who choose life in the midst of inconvenient circumstances are to be admired.
